Unethical Billing Practices – Beware if You Have Cigna

I’m extremely disappointed with the billing practices at this dental clinic. They charged me $2,080 more than what they are contracted to receive from Cigna, my insurance provider. As a contracted, in-network provider, they are legally and ethically obligated to honor the rates negotiated with Cigna — but instead, I was billed significantly above that amount.

Despite multiple attempts to resolve this issue, the clinic failed to provide a clear explanation or adjust the overcharge. Patients deserve transparency, respect, and fair billing — not surprise charges that violate insurance agreements.

If you are insured, especially through Cigna, I urge you to review your Explanation of Benefits carefully and confirm what the clinic is actually allowed to charge before proceeding with treatment here. I regret trusting them with my care and will be reporting this to both my insurance company and the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry.

Been going to this dentist for a few years now with no issues, doing my basic cleaning every 6 months. Until a few weeks ago I had a routine xray and was told I all of a sudden needed 3 root canals. This was a shock to me as I have no pain, no sensitivity, and no indication of an issue at all. I was not shown the x rays or even offered an explanation as to why I need 3 root canals out of no where without even an attempt to do a filling. As I see the receptionist I'm hit with an estimate that would be around $2500 even after the insurance. After leaving the office, I immediately called a few different dentists offices in the area, all of them said it's odd to have no pain or sensitivity and need a root canal, let alone 3 of them. One of those offices was who my wife has been going to for years so they took me in as a new patient and did a consult. Luckily they were able to get the x rays from Tannersville dental so they saw the exact same pictures. At the consult it was determined to be 3 cavities, all of which both dentists agreed fillings would be the acceptable procedure. Fast forward a few weeks, I have had all 3 cavities filled, still zero pain, at a cost of $115 that even includes the $39 consultation. I'm not sure if it was negligence or an attempt to make more money(they do the root canals in office) but after seeing all of the reviews mirroring my experience I felt obligated to make my first ever review to hopefully save someone a very large unnecessary bill. My whole family has since switched dentists and I would advise anyone else to do the same. On a side note the hygienist I've used at Tannersville dental is wonderful, but it isn't enough to make me step foot into that place again.

I’m shocked to see all the negative reviews because I’ve had nothing but great experiences here. Each dental hygienist cleans my teeth with care and honors my request each time to not use the power tools. I only like the manual cleaning and they’re totally fine with that. The Dentist has always been kind to me. The office staff is fine, nothing bad from my point of view. I just think people get upset when they don’t realize their insurance only covers so much but that’s not the offices fault.

My entire experience was very questionable. I have never before cried during a cleaning. Dear god this dental hygienist scraped the inside my teeth without caution as if indestructible. for context, I'm 28 and during my most previous cleaning was scared straight into the best flossing habit on personal record leading up to this visit. She blamed me as if coming in more often would have resulted in gentler care.

Then the Dentist came in. Why was I leading the maybe 3 minute conversation? Xrays were skimmed at best. Dentists like this are exactly the reason why I didn't find out I needed braces until last year in my late 20s. Made me feel like I was just another dollar sign.

I went in with pain looking for relief. After taking x-rays they said I needed a root canal. But they were closing soon and they refused to do it. I had to ask for a prescription for the pain before I left, it wasn't even offered. Go elsewhere.

So, this morning, 4 out of 5 of my family members woke up sick. Cold, the Flu, COVID, who knows. My wife called IMMEDIATELY, not good enough, they're going to charge us $75 for a no show. Perhaps we should have shown up and gotten everyone sick?

They would rather charge a family of 5 $75, and lose all the money for future visits, than be at all reasonable. Not just bad business practice, but stupid.

Go at your own risk, does not know how to bill insurance. Tried to have me pay 575 when I only need to pay 80. Had to go back 3 times for pain after filling then the Dentist filed away half a tooth. Would not give me a copy of my chart. And email my xrays with no encryption. Need to go to another dentist several times just to be able to eat with minimal pain. Trust me do not go to this dentist!!!

Our daughter went to Tannersville dental and was told she had 10 cavities and she needed to have two root canals done for the sum of eight thousand dollars. We thought something was not right and she went to another dentist to get another opinion and they found she had four cavities and she did not need any root canals at all. Even the staff at the other dentist could not believe what they wanted to charge ,and they found nothing to indicate that she needed any root canals. I know prices can vary from different businesses but to out right lie and try to rip you off for eight thousand dollars is inexcusable. Save your money and go to another dentist.
